Diwali: The Festival Of Lights

Diwali or Deepavali, whatever you call it, is the biggest festival of the year, which is loved by all and celebrated with great enthusiasm. It is between mid-October and mid-November, that the festival comes to illuminate your house for five consecutive days. As the name Deepavali says, it is a festival of ‘deep’ or ‘diyas‘. It symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

Why Is Diwali Celebrated?

Although there are many mythological stories about the Diwali festival, not everyone can remember them. But there is a significance to each day of the Diwali week, which fills our hearts with divine happiness and festive vibes.

First Day: Dhanteras

The first day of Diwali is celebrated to praise the Lord Dhanwantari, who brought ayurvedic medicine from the sea for the welfare of mankind. People buy various things on this day, such as gold, silver, precious stones, ornaments, new clothing, and utensils.

Second Day: Narak Chaturdashi

The day of Narak Chaturdashi is also known as Choti Diwali. This was the day when Lord Krishna offered the world peace and freedom by killing a demon named Narakasur. On this day, people massage their bodies with oil and scents to remove all the fatigue and then take the bath.

Third-Day: Laxmi Puja

On the third day of Diwali, Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped for blessing us with prosperity. This is the actual day of the Diwali celebration. People light diyas in and around their houses, decorate their houses with flowers and fairy lights, and burn firecrackers.

Fourth Day: Balipratipada/Padwa

This day is recognized as the day when Lord Krishna brought the people of Vraja to Govardhan Puja. Thus this day is also known as the new year of the Vraja people. People keep their businesses closed on this day, and worship their instruments, arms, and equipment, considering it the day of Vishwakarma.

Fifth Day: Bhai Dooj

The Bhai Dooj is the day when the Lord of Death, Yama came to his sister the Yamuna, and gave her a boon that the person who visited her that day would be freed from all sins. So on the day of Bhai Dooj, the brothers visit their sisters, and the sisters praise their brothers and make some sweets for them.

People clean their houses and workplaces and start decorating their house with various types of Diwali decoration ideas. You can even draw a rangoli this Diwali, by referring to the easy rangoli designs for Diwali, that anyone can draw, without taking much effort and time. So not only this is the festival of lights, but also a good opportunity to show your creativity!

The festival also brings closeness to family, relatives, and friends. They meet each other to wish a happy Diwali, by gifting them some sweets. Wish to gift something appreciative to your friends and family? Then read our post about unique Diwali gift ideas.
